Laboratory Technician and Support Specialist, Natural Science Lab Salary: $15.80 - $23.20 Hourly Location: Bradenton Job Type: Department: Natural Science Job Number: Closing: Continuous Job Summary Prepares, coordinates and supervises all materials used in instructional laboratories. Inventories, organizes and maintains equipment and materials. Assists with the day-to-day oversight and maintenance of the instructional laboratory facilities Assists faculty with curriculum development and directly supports the implementation of laboratory educational activities. Assists in the compliance with safety protocols and programs defined by the College, the Natural Science Department and by state of federal agencies. Provides direct training and supervision of student assistants within the laboratories. This is a 12 month 35 hour per week position. Applicants may be asked to demonstrate any or all of the following duties: • Provides technical and practical laboratory support to all Science laboratory courses offered at the College. This includes but is not limited to the following disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Anatomy/Physiology, Interdisciplinary Science, Biotechnology and Physics/Physical Science. • Prepares, organizes and coordinates the materials and supplies for laboratory classes. Creates, develops and updates documents such as preparation sheets, activity protocols and various teaching aids that allow for the efficient management of lab materials and effective preparation of lab activities for faculty and students. Oversees quality assurance and quality control of all educational lab activities. • Assists faculty with the development and implementation of instructional laboratory activities. Conducts technical lab work, collects results, provides analysis and recommendations, troubleshoots as needed and collaborates with faculty to determine best practices and to implement efficient and effective procedures and processes. • Coordinates the use of laboratory equipment, materials and shared resources to meet daily instructional requirements. Collaborates with faculty and team members to meet lab activity scheduling needs. Works with faculty to adjust activity schedules when necessary. Acts to provide alternative solutions and recommendations when anticipated timing conflicts occur with shared resources. • Performs other duties as assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. • Education/Experience: Associate's degree from two-year college or university and two or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Essential Skill Expectations: -Biology and/or Chemistry background-Experience working with chemicals, preparation of chemical solutions, making dilutions and handling hazardous waste-Math skills to facilitate solution preparation-Ability to multitask and be flexible-Ability to cope with sudden changes in schedule or plans-Ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines-Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner-Ability to follow directions accurately-Ability to delegate work and supervise student employees-Keen time management skills-Detail oriented-Service oriented-Excellent interpersonal "people" skills are required-Ability to work in a team environment as well as ability to work independently-Ability to maintain clear, concise records for lab set up, inventory and requesting/managing supplies-Ability to maintain a clean, well-organized and safe lab environment-Experience with identifying supply needs and generating lists of supplies and materials needed in the lab-Computer skills such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook • Supervisory Experience: No supervisory experience required. • Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to technical questions and/or complaints from College leadership, customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the community. • Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentage area, circumference, and volume. Ability to compute ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to work with formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc. • Computer Skills: Intermediate level word processing, spreadsheets, internet and e-mail. Additional knowledge of discipline specific software. Must be proficient in current College e-mail, database and other College required software. Must remain current with technology changes. • Certificates and Licenses: May be required in science laboratories. Responsibility for People and Property: This position is responsible for assisting with routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and for assuring that laboratory equipment is safe and secure. This position supervises Student Assistants. Responsibility for Communication: • Internal Contacts Routine contact with students, faculty and instructional administrative staff, occasional contact with other State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota administrative and support departments. • External Contacts Occasional contact with vendors; occasional contact with prospective students, general public and professionals appropriate for discipline.
