Event Description:
Time Sifters is holding an archaeological training series led by board member Dr. Steven Derfler, who spent his career excavating significant sites in the Middle East. The class will be presented over a series of three days. The first day (2/23/19) will be in the classroom, to discuss archaeologists and how they work, with an in-depth presentation of archaeological methods and techniques. The afternoon will finish up with the methods presentation to be followed by a walk-about surface survey of the area to be excavated. The second day (3/16/19), will see a demonstration of ground penetrating radar, establish a grid, and excavate test squares. The third day (Apr. TBA) will be spent in the lab sorting, cleaning, and cataloging the objects excavated. On the first two days lunch will be provided. The third day is only 1/2 day. Because this is an authentic excavation, participants must attend the first class before participating in the actual excavation. The class will take place in Bradenton at the Curry Houses Historic District, a significant site near the Manatee River and Manatee Mineral Springs. Participation is limited to the first 20 people who register. Register on Time Sifters Website. www.timesifters.org
