Name: Jiggs Landing 75th Anniversary Event
Date: November 30, 2019
Time: 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM EST
Event Description:
On Saturday, November 30, 2019 the public is invited to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the opening of Jiggs Landing with live music, cold beer on tap and wine. Enjoy a delicious, traditional Florida fish fry with fresh mullet, hushpuppies, swamp cabbage and collard greens. This family-friendly event provides a glimpse into the rich history of an old Florida fish camp. The Jiggs Landing Preserve is conveniently located at 6106 63rd Street East, just off SR 70, Bradenton and provides access to the waters of the Evers Reservoir and Braden River. Visitors to Jiggs Landing will enjoy a family day in nature with waterside pavilions, grills, a playground, rental kayaks and canoes, electric boat tours and concessions. There are four air-conditioned rental cabins on a boardwalk that leads to some of the most beautiful sunsets in Florida. Jiggs Landing is named after Al “Jiggs” Metcalfe who started the fishing camp in 1944. He reminded folks of “Jiggs” from the comic strip “Jiggs & Maggie.” Jiggs bought seven acres of land in 1944 and built cabins out of recycled wood from an old schoolhouse. With his wife, Agnes, he sold the land in 1968. Manatee County took ownership in 2007 and through the efforts of Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources and members of the Old Braden River Historical Society, Jiggs Landing has been brought to life again with an eye on its rich history.
